Cloisonné Enamel Jewelry and Fine Art by Margaret Lann Bell
A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Margaret Lann Bell is an artist who designs and produces enameled jewelry and fine art. All of the jewelry is executed in the ancient art of cloisonné enamel and set in sterling silver. Many of the pieces include precious and semi-precious stones and swarovski crystal. Each beaded piece is hand knotted in the tradition of strung pearls on a synthetic silk cord. Margaret's jewelry is a tribute to nature, often featuring insects and floral imagery.
All of Margaret's pieces are one-of-a-kind. Explore the samples on the Jewelry for Sale and Art for Sale pages. You can purchase the pieces shown or use them as a starting-off point for a special commission (for example, you love one of the floral necklaces but would like something similar but in peach instead of green).
Artist statement
As an artist and craftsperson I strive to make work that can be cherished and enjoyed by the owner. Whether it is a piece to hang in your home, or jewelry to wear, I attempt to create work that is lavish and beautiful. Much of my inspiration comes from the natural world, specifically insects and flowers. It is the intricacy and individuality which exists in these living things that I feel compelled to emulate.
My technique of choice is cloisonne enamel. This traditional medium allows me to capture the gem-like qualities of butterflies and the flowing lines of flowers. Because there are so many varieties of butterflies and each leaf curls in a different direction, I want to relay this feeling of uniqueness. The cloisonne wire allows me to represent each line of whatever image I am creating, making every leaf, wing or bud distinctive. The process of layering the enamel to create new colors also guarantees that each piece is one of a kind.
Line and pattern are also important aspects of my work. The lines of the Art Nouveau period and the patterns from the Arts and Crafts era influence many of my designs. Much of my art is done on a flat plane, creating a dialogue between the areas of color and the line which makes up the compositon.
No matter what I am creating, I try to infuse the object with integrity, spirit, and love for the process of art. My hope is that my work will inspire others to treasure some of what I find special. I believe that art and craft can transcend the ordinary and tell the story of ourselves and our world.
